Subsurf problems in 2.4 alpha1

Post by Peacenik »

Hi,

I hope this is the right place to post this. I just installed Blender 2.4 alpha 1 today and was trying out the new fluid sim. I set up a sphere and turned on subsurf when I noticed it was in a new spot. The problem is that subsurf squished my perfectly round sphere both in the 3D Viewport and when rendered.

I read that the subsurfacing code was rewritten. Could this be a problem with the new code? Has anyone else had this problem?

Hmmm....

On further investigation I noticed that this seems to only happen (noticeably, at least) when you use less then 32 rings and segments.

However, it's still uexpected behaviour, so my original post is still valid.

Have you checked the behavior again previous versions of Blender? If you're using a UV sphere (not isosphere) then that behavior makes perfect sense, because you have less geometry density up/down than you have circling the rings. Subdivision surfaces tend to shrink low-density meshing.

Thanks cessen. I'm not a heavy Blender user, so I guess I just hadn't tried subsurfing such a low-rez sphere.

Oh well, I'll use an isoshpere then.
