I made a simple proposal for what i call "Submaps" please ask questions and comment.

we had a little discussion about your notes - the idea is a bit difficult to get, but i think we eventually understood it, but don't know enough about the details of implementing 3d systems in the low levels to know whether it's really useful.

perhaps someone more knowledgeable will see this here and comment..

Submap? It looks like vertex displacement to me.

Yes, what i show in the concept is just vertex displacement, but in fact, this concept would be also for replacing all kinds of textures and radiosity baking. It wouldn't have to be used sync with subsurf, so the resolution of these displacement/texture/radiosity maps could be different from each other and also from the resolution of subsurf.
