I've been trying to find a way to do this recently, as I have to use 3ds Max for an animation, but I didn't want to do much except animations in 3ds Max (yet, I only have a few months until deadline).

But, you can use the "Autodesk FBX" export script, then go into 3ds Max and select "Import" - not "Open." Select the .fbx file type, go to the file location...

And it works! Saves cameras, lights, and claims it will also work for armatures, but I haven't tried that yet.

This may only be available in 2.49b, of course, so if you haven't upgraded, it would be best to do so.
