Bcon2006 session: What i wish to have in Blender

in the "What i wish to have in Blender" session
Roland and Bassam wished there where named layers in Blender.
I thought about it and made some screens:
Layer name and color (for wireframe mode in 3d view) setup in the draw panel:
Layer names when moving objects from one layer to another:
Layer names in the headerbar of the 3d view:
I didn't find a good solution for the Armature layer yet (Bassam's wish).
Not all file formats support multimaterial per mesh so it would be cool at add an entry to the Seperate menu called "By Material Indices":

I'm all for the material split, actualy I think it's then a vertex group split (very doable with the select by vertex group-> separate) , but anyway...
Ton stated it could easaly be done in the exporter to the troublesome fileformat.

Btw... I thought the session got a bit out of hand when blender features where suggested using blender as suppost to the excellent demos of what other packages have as great features.
I thought most demos where about previsualizing what is going to happen and post action visual alteration.
- Snapping by showing in wire or with icons where the moving object will get snapped to.
- Altering values after a tool is used:
for example add icosphere and then have a numslide to alter subdivs and see what number does what.
As showed by matt.
Actualy I'm not to sure there should be an OK. Hitting a hotkey should automaticly make this action go OK.
This should also work for select, delete, etc. etc.

may we need both "By VertexGroups" and "By Material Indices". The Radiosity feature creates Material Indices but not new vertex groups. May some people want to split in vertex groups.
I talked to Roland Hollman which shows the snapping in MicroStation at the BConf and we developed a workflow for snapping.
I will visulize that soon.

Can we have Random (0 - 100% & Seed) values in the Array Modifier?
Would produce a seperate multiplyer for each array parameter
It's be fantastic to produce arrays with some jitter.
Afterthought: You should be able to make it even or cumulative as well
(Even - each iteration is calculated from original then randomly offset)
(Cumulative - each iteration is calculated from previous then randomly offset)
Wish I could remember 1/2 my C and C++ classes from Tech, then I'd have a go myself.

Joeri, thanks for mocking up that image, that's a good description of what I was trying to talk about. FYI, the demonstration video of the same sort of workflow concept from Modo that I showed is here: http://content.luxology.com/modo/201/vi ... ension.mov

I think it's important that the sliders and numbuts need to be non-blocking. So I can keep holding my LMB and still see what changes will happen.
For the meantime it might be possible to create a hack that just does an undo and then a redo with new values.

I'd like to have a "Neg" button for inverting the blend mode. Often i'd like to switch HOR and Zen color which is at the moment very painfull.
Or a "NegMode" and "Neg" button, "NegMode" negates the blending mode by switching HOR and ZEN color and "Neg" inverts the colors.
Layer names, sets, selection, locking proposal

a while ago I thought about something like a layer manager and created some screenshots of what it could look like. Perhaps any programmer gets inspired.
Check it out here: http://www.jackbox.woidwideweb.de/tmp/l ... /index.php
