AI simulation for animation

I would like to make a AI simulation to be recorded as a animation, my final goal would be to make a good and complex AI for crowd and actor autonomous behaviour.

But for now my goal is just having something simple working, so for this I think I would need at least:

- physics
- navmesh
- record frames

The problem is, I think, physics and navmesh are in game engine and using the recording option in game engine will only record physics, any other recording functions are only available in the blender script env.

So, what would be the best solution too accomplish my goals?

I have already made a small test with game engine and navmesh here but I am unable to save it as animation.
