Getting values from the skin modifier

How can I access vertex/node radii and find out which vertices are marked loose using Python?

e.g.

me = bpy.context.object.data
me.skin_vertices[0].data[#].use_loose

apperently accissble in object mode only!
I'm sitting, waiting, wishing, building Blender in superstition...
