Child bones are rolled 180?

Child bones are rolled 180?

I am writing an exporter that includes armature information.

One thing I've noticed is that if I create a root bone, and then extend children bone out from it, they all appear to have a roll of 180 degrees? I can verify this if I select each bone and hit 'N'; the properties list a roll of 180 for all child bones but not the root bone. Why is that?
