Room Tracing for Dimension Calculation

Hey everyone,

I am currently working on my BSc thesis and as part of my project I need to calculate the dimensions of the room the user is in (from the head of the avatar in First Person) and get the information constantly updating as the player moves the avatar around the level.

My theory is to send out from (for the moment) the X,Y,Z both negative and positive (so 6 points) and when they come in contact with the surface, such as a wall, it gives the distance from the user to the wall.

The reason I am doing this is to calculate the the room modes and in turn bang the info to delay lines to create the early reflections of the rooms.

So my question is really how the best way to go about my theory is?
