the ramps feature recently added would make it much easier
[look for stahlberg's skin tut]

though, it would still be a lot of work

[and shadows for hair can take forever to render... depends on what kind of shadows you use]

Possible, but it will probably take a VERY long time. As Blender matures and more features are added, it would make it much more easier.

Since MAX have Sub-surface scatter support, I guess yes. But it could be emulated in Blender with the new RAMP shader. Not a true SSS sicne it doesn't take into account the "depth" of the object, but it should look ok in an outdoor environment.

From what i have experianced, everything and anything is possible in Blender, basically. But a lot of the time it has to be faked, or used a work around. But since its free u can't complain. Plus at its current devlopment rate, it will be very very good in a few years. At the moment, its only Amazing, soon it will Fantastically Amazing

In this Proyect we have created the most photorealistic human skin shader made from scrach in C++ with Mental Ray code and for Softimage XSI to the date. This Skin shader is so real that if you put a photograph next to the shader you won´t even notice the difference.

This proyect is produced by Sintesys International Animation School it is free and is divided in 5 parts.

1.- Memory of the Skin shader proyect (Explains the whole proyect)

The memory is provided just in Spanish use your

preferred software to translate it.

2.- Shaders & Manuals on how to install and use the shader. ...

3.- Open Source Code in C++ Explaining all the functions.

4.- Tutorial so you can learn by yourself how to create your own shaders

5.- Demo Scenes (You need to download & install the shaders first)
