Firstly, I think it's the Image Browser that should pop up instead of the file browser when you press "Load Image", or try to "Open" an image in the uv-editor. Secondly, I think the thumbnails really should have more than 256 colours... It feels like the Image Browser has been forgotten or something.
The image browser is done by me using code from frank, updated by zr.
Nobody understands how it works.
It's almost 10 years old code and was in need of a redo long time ago.
But redoing a crossplatform a-sync (image) file version tracker is not an easy task.

I made a patch some time ago to show the thumbnails at 2X size, and that simple task really was like a hell, because everything is hard coded and very cryptic
I don't continue updating it because someone (I don't remember who but whould be in the patch tracker) tell me that a new image loader was planed in near future apart I'm not a "C" coder.

talked to elubie last night, she is really busy with work for the next three weeks but might have time to finish after that. She is basically done, just some performance tweaking and policy choices for where to store preview images etc.
