Aurora Borealis

Hi,

i wonder what would be the best way to achieve an "Aurora Borealis" like effect?

On Wikipedia there are some nice photos:

Has anybody got an example of something like this?

idea 1

since the aurora is a plasma particles would work great you can try fluid particles also you can use fields to influence particles

you could use ribbons of mesh with transparency enabled and paint them
