Any chance you could mention what blender IS?
Well, it's the usual story for an open source website - it looks ok, but there is no information immediately available that describes what the heck this software IS! Is it any wonder windows machines dominate the earth? At least Microsoft is smart enough to put a 'word processor' label on MS Office...

Um, it's a 3D modeler. Check out http://www.blender3d.com for info.John Doe wrote:Well, it's the usual story for an open source website - it looks ok, but there is no information immediately available that describes what the heck this software IS! And don't ever say Blender's worse than M$ stuff.

WTF are you doing here...
if you don't know what Blender is???
How did you hear about www.blender3d.org? from the slashdot article? mindless wondering around the web? a million monkies typing in Google searches?
For pete's sake...do some research. www.google.com is a good place to start. Ton figures that if you made it this far, you must know something about Blender's history and purpose.

Yes, I heard about it from the Slashdot article, is that ok? Thanks for the tip about Google, you could go and search for some tips about how to be less of a jerk as you're such a pro.
I was trying to make the point that the homepage for a project would do well to actually describe what that project is. I guess you think that l@mers from slashdot who aren't 31337 enough to know what Blender is aren't worthy of your public license patronage anyway...

Hey hey, lets not get all fired up here...
John Doe: this site's BRAND new, but their has been other sites up such as www.elysiun.com for a lot longer. Meaning that most of us already knew all about it. Shaftoe...that was pretty mean...
btw...welcome to the community!
Oh and Rillopy: rock on dude

You are 100% correct. I'm always grumping about that too. People don't seem to realize that they need to explain who they are and what they are about. The clearer and faster you show what your program is and what it can do, the happier the "surfer" will be and the more flies you will catch.
Gee, that's really cool, look what this thing can do, I'm gonna join. I'm just a dumb programmer but this looks neat.....
And we'll be drooling, yes!!! caught another programmer in our web!!!
See? We need clarity.... very very crystal clear sign saying what Blender is!
Love Ingie

You're right it would be nice if it was a bit more descriptive. However, blender.org is the development hub for Blender, while blender3d.com is the 'public face' of Blender. So it's kind of expected that if you're going to blender.org you already know what it is.
I can see how this could be a problem though, since many people will instinctively type blender.org or get the link passed to them or something. It'd probably be a good idea to put some sort of message online directing people to blender3d.com if they're not interested in development.

It will slowly come, it's just that Timothy was very busy getting the site to work as it is, and noone else has had access to add content - this will change soon enough.
sad....
blender.org seems to be much more well designed (in terms of how it looks) than blender3d.com.
Why is it that the development site looks a heck of a lot better than the user site. Developers don't care about the cool web-art, as long as it gets the job done. On the user site, we should be advertising Blender with all the web-art stuff.

Re: sad....
Sorry to point this out however the Blender3d.com site was up during a time when everyone had better things to worry about than graphics, such as getting enought money so that blender.org could be possible.sharp wrote:blender.org seems to be much more well designed (in terms of how it looks) than blender3d.com.
