using reference material

This question has probably been asked before, but I wasn't able to find it in the search, so excuse my ignorance.

Is there a way to use an image (bitmap) as a reference for model building? That is loading a picture onto say a plane, putting that plane in the background and modeling the shape infront of it. I've seen this done in other 3d software.

I've been using blender since the days (I even have the 1.5 manual) and I love it, but this is one feature that I'm not sure about (if it even exists at all). Thank you for your help.

This group is about writing documentation and or
educational projects for blender/3dapps not a howto

You should goto and ask there.

To answer your question though goto your 3d window
click on the window type and change it to buttons window
Click on the button background image and find your image
with the fileselection box
Then change it back to 3dwindow type and your good to go.
