During the last Blender Conference (2011), many attendants were interested in a plugin to load geographical information as 3D meshes in Blender.
We have finally been able to update an old script that could do that in 2.49, so that it will now work in the 2.5x, 2.60 versions.

It is setup as a simple plugin, so you can install it in the .blender/2.60/scripts/addons directory. Then enable it in the File>User Preferences...> Addons>Import-Export
It can load files in the .asc format. Examples of such files can be found at:
