Severing rigged models mid-animation

Here's another question which I'm not quite sure of.

I've made a model which is connected to an armature skeleton. I then used the rip tool to separate all the model's limbs into different objects, while they keep the original weight paint. I'm now trying to figure out how I can animate a model doing something, and then have one of the limbs fly off in the middle of an animation.

One possibility is setting the limb's bones to not be connected to the rest of the body, but then you'll have to move all the bones manually when posing the model and you won't be able to use IK.

Another option would be to animate the armature normally, and set keyframes modifying the limbs positions to separate them from the body. But this obviously fails as the vertices get all screwed up as they go far away from the armature.

Being able to disconnect/connect bones mid-animation would be ideal, but I haven't found such an option.

Is there some other method I have missed?
