Im still running off windows XP, What version of windows should I use when I upgrade. Does blender run differnet on those to??

As long as you have a working video driver that supports OpenGL, you should be good to go no matter what version of Windows. In theory, anyway.

I just upgraded my Win 7, under which Blender was running nicely, to Win 8 under which Blender is crashing by the momen I try to fire it up.

OK, Blender is running again

, just downgraded the graphics driver.

Blender works flawlessly under both windows 8 and windows 7. There might however be some driver issues - make sure to upgrade them to the newest version available. (Or as previous poster, downgrade until working drivers are devloped).
