Blender's renderer and external renderer export

I'm new to blender and getting adjusted to it, I'm finding textures specificly difficult. When doing wood texture it goes from #1 colour then #2 colour then #1 again, but how do I make each line thinner and the lines more numerous. Im making a simple table but my mug is sitting on 1 line or grain of the wood and it looks unrealistic, any help would be appreciated.
